Holiday Mantel Decorating

What I call the “mantel” is actually a shelf in the dining room. I picked this up for free about three years ago in our apartment building in Brooklyn. So glad I did!

My theme this year is pretty eclectic as far as colors go. My goal is to find new ways to use what I already have. I love decorations that can be used in multiple ways.

The wooden santa is a favorite of mine! A couple of years ago I asked my moms friends if they has any old decorations that they weren’t using anymore and this santa was in the box of cast-aways. The wreath was a recent purchase from Magpie and Cake. I am 100% in love! I’ve been wanting to make a yarn wreath of my own, but when I spotted this one on sale, I couldn’t resist. I love how beautiful it is with my Christmas decor, but also love that I can use it year-round.

The apothecary jar was a wedding gift. I’ve used it for everything from holding crafting scissors, to moss for my jewelry display. I simply filled it with last years Christmas bulbs for a festive addition to the mantel/shelf.

The candelabra is from Goodwill and was used in my Halloween display. I might polish it for the holidays.

The red candle holder is from the college party days. I’ve used it in centerpieces with wreaths, or just a simple addition to the coffee table.

The knitted stockings were purchased at the Joanns after Christmas sale a few years ago. The felt stockings were gifts, and the glitter skeleton key was a recent Wal-Mart purchase for a dollar.  The glitter garland is from Michaels (half-off) and I’ve been using it on my jewelry table.

Cookie Packaging

I love baking and giving away cookies for the holidays! Last year I created gift baskets filled with fruit, nuts and handmade goodies. This year, I’m shipping these mexican hot chocolate cookies out to a few distant friends for a holiday swap. There are so many ways that you can creatively package cookies, but my favorite way is with these clear treat bags.

The labels were purchased on sale last year at Target (I think!). I’m positive that they are carrying them again this year. I love how cute the designs are. You can also tie decorative ribbon around your packages for a festive and personalized look.

Place your cookies in stockings, on the top of gifts, in baskets or on your co-workers desk. I can’t wait to send these out!

Chocolate Hazelnut Bites

busybeecateringchocolatebites Chocolate Hazelnut BitesI can hardly call this a recipe because they’re so easy to put together. These chocolate hazelnut bites can be assembled in less than 5 minutes and cost around $4 to make. Not only are the impressive looking, but they’re delicious.

Fill you cups with a heaping teaspoon of Nutella.

How to Make the Most of Black Friday

blackfridaybanner How to Make the Most of Black Friday

This guest post is written by Miranda who found a way to turn an often dreaded day into a memorable holiday tradition with her Mom. Here are her tips for making Black Friday a success.

Chances are you’ve heard the horror stories about Black Friday and maybe you’ve seen news clips of stampeding crowds at WalMart.  But I’m willing to bet you know a few people who have score some killer deals by dragging themselves out of bed at the crack of dawn to go shopping.  (I’m one of ‘em.)  Whether or not to shop on Black Friday is a decision you’ll have to make for yourself.  If it’s not your thing then I fully support your decision to stay in bed.   But if the siren song of a door buster sale proves impossible to pass up (there’s always someone to buy for – family, friends, Toys for Tots, you) let an old Black Friday vet pass along a few tips before you find yourself standing outside an electronic store at 4AM.

Plan ahead.

I don’t care if you’re a free spirit every other day of the year; Black Friday is a day for planners.  The absolute worst thing to do is decide at the last minute where you’re going to go or what items you’re after.  This is not a time to play it by ear; this is a time to strategize.  Pick up the local newspaper on Thanksgiving Day and sort through the Black Friday ads.  Be prepared to see more ads than actual news stories.  Ads are great because they give you a tangible way to see who has the best deals and what time each store opens.  They’ll help you prioritize where to go and when.  Keep your store locations in mind too.  Strip malls are your friends.  That iPod might be $10 cheaper at a store across town but is it worth the time and energy to go so far out of your way? Probably not.

Go to bed early and eat some breakfast when you wake up.

One year I stayed up all night in line at Circuit City with my friends and it was one of the most miserable experiences of my life.  By 7 AM we were cranky, exhausted, and mostly empty-handed.  Not worth it.  Unless you’re willing to camp out all night for a shot at being one of the ten people who gets a deal on a flat screen TV your best bet is to ride that turkey coma to an early bedtime on Thanksgiving. Try to get at least seven hours of sleep.  Take a shower when you wake up and make sure you eat a decent breakfast.  Remember, protein is your friend.

Be nice.

This seems self-explanatory, right?  It’s true there are some crazy, nasty people who hit the stores on Black Friday.  Some people will try to jump the line and get inpatient waiting in long checkout lines.  But you’re better than that.  A little kindness goes a long way with fellow shoppers, with your shopping companions, and with – wait for it – store employees.  You think you’re frustrated waiting in line?  So is the person who had to haul their cookies into work to run a cash register at 4 AM.  Smile.  Say please and thank you.  Make polite conversation.  Be a decent human being.

Divide and conquer.

Your goal at any given store should be to get in and get out as soon as possible, but you’re going to spend a lot of time waiting in line.  There are never enough cash registers to keep up with the shopping crowd.  This is a reality of Black Friday shopping and you need to accept it now.  If you need several items from one store your best bet is to split up from your shopping buddy (mine is my mom) so you can grab what you need and hop in the checkout queue.  If it looks like you’re going to be waiting for more than 20 minutes it’s not a bad idea for one person to hop in line while the other grabs one last item but do not, under any circumstances get in line with one item and hold things up while your companion tries to grab everything on her list.  Not cool.

Treat yourself.

I think if you’re willing to put in the Black Friday effort you should get something out of it.  It’s a great feeling when you score a deal on a gift for someone you love but since they won’t unwrap that present for a month I’m a big believer in the smaller, more immediate reward.  So get yourself a nice bottle of lotion while you’re shopping at Bath & Body Works or add some door buster DVDs to your personal library.  Every year when we’re done shopping my mom and I go to Bob Evans for a big, comfy, late-breakfast.  We laugh and rehash our deals (past and present) over pancakes and coffee.  It sounds silly but that’s one of my favorite holiday traditions.

This is my way of finding new traditions and challenging myself to make the most of the holidays in this new chapter of my life. I hope you will join me here every day to find ideas for your family and home this holiday season!

Organizing Time

I’m back with another round of “how do I fit it all in?” I’m headed into another crazy week and I want to make sure I utilize my time in the best possibly way. I’ve found that as long as I have some me time I can get a lot done. Me time is: exercise, relaxing (watching mad men!), getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep, and a little time for pampering such as a bath, nails, feet, shaving etc.

I met with the ladies last night in our little group, the “Floyd Creative Collective”. I found that aside from being creative we all love having a lot to do. In fact, we all almost always have something, if not many items on our to-do list at any given time. Not having something to do isn’t a goal of mine. My biggest goal is getting stuff time on time, with little stress.

Right now the biggest areas of my life that needed attention are: freelance projects, jewelry projects (plus marketing and branding), exercise, blogging, the holidays, the house, and preparing meals. I find it particularly challenging to balance all of these items.

My unorganized to-do list:

Package and deliver necklace to MIL (this has been on my list for shamefully way too long)

Take checks to the bank

Take trash to the dumpster

Stamp necklace order

Finish custom necklace illustration-email

Prepare jewelry orders from jewelry party, organize mailing addresses

Buy sweaters for holiday portrait (make a reservation with sears)

Work on holiday christmas gift list, begin making handmade gifts

work on holiday swap gifts

figure out how to upload podcast

finish doing the dishes/laundry

clean the bathroom/change sheets

organize closet and clothes for winter

Update healthy for the holidays, work on next weeks goals

Do Wear it Well course next week on the blog, add special holiday section

I put in bold everything I hope to get done. For fun, tonight I’m roasting a chicken (this is fun for me) and watching the last harry potter movie to catch up.

Goals for today:

Finish stamped necklace (by 4pm)

exercise 35-45 min. (3pm)

go to yarn shop opening

roast chicken (12 pm)

Figure out how to upload podcast to podomatic (with josh, give to M)

Print flyers to hang up tomorrow and sunday for holiday market

work on jewelry inventory for tomorrow

finish table sign for catering (next week)

Do dishes

dry laundry, wash another load, dry put away

take trash to the dumpster

I’ll be back tomorrow with updates!!

Oh November, you’re lookin’ good

This month promises to be pure madness. I’m excited and scared. As I write this I have tasks to be completed and writing them out, I hope, will clear my head. In October I kept thinking “okay after ____” I can relax a bit or once such and such passes I will be okay. Yet, I’m finding that while I’m up for the challenge, it continues again this month. I feel lucky to have so many interesting and exciting projects going on this month.

This week:

Today I’m finishing up some freelance projects: specifically a newsletter, some ads, and a flyer

This evening a couple of local graphic designers are coming over to drink wine and discuss design, goals and network. So excited!

(sidenote: need to straighten up the house and make some sort of food item)

I’ve joined a podcast with my real-life blog friends Krissie and Miranda. Our first recording was last night! I’m working on a blog + banner to host our podcast.

I’m finishing up marketing materials for the floyd Holiday Market, this will include posters, flyers, postcards and a facebook page.

Friday I’m setting up at the market for a few hours and then Saturday I’m making my way to Franklin Co. high school to sell jewelry.

Sunday I’m baking a cheesecake for my co-worker (my first cake order!) I need to purchase a spring-form pan, bakery box and print a sticker with my logo on it.

Next week:

I’m doing my Wear it Well e-course on my TFG blog

I’m also starting my Home for the Holidays segment on this blog

Getting ready for a jewelry party in WV on Saturday, and cooking for my family on Sunday

Also:

Training for two 5k’s at the end of the month

Planning out holiday gifts (handmaking most of them)

Did you make this?

I’ve had a lot of questions since I’ve taken my jewelry on the road (so to speak), one being “did you make this?” and the other being “how long have you been making jewelry?” The first one I usually shrug off, people are used to women selling jewelry through large companies that look similar to mine and I think having a certain “look” with displays and packaging that can throw people off as well. I started making, assembling, designing jewelry about a year ago.

I wanted to have a booth at the local craft fair, something I’ve always wanted to do, but didn’t know what to sell. I couple of my co-workers were making jewelry at the time and I bought a very basic kit from Michael’s to get started. My booth ended up being a few necklaces and earrings along with handmade Floyd postcards, note card sets, and recipe cards. The kit that I purchased contained round-nose pliers, plastic beads, needle-nose pliers, toggles, beading wire among other things.

My creativity was sparked…I had no idea where to start so I just dove in. I began collecting images online of jewelry that inspired me, collecting books to learn new techniques and around December put a huge chunk on money on my credit card to buy metal smithing supplies. All told I’ve probably invested well over two thousand dollars in supplies, books, classes and better tools. My goal has always been this: to create jewelry that I would want to wear. Followed by offering a range of pieces that anyone could afford. High-end and low-end.

Pricing seems to be a huge deal in the jewelry world. Charge too much and you will get looks and even the occasional comment “you want $100 for that?!!? I could make that!” (yeah, but you didn’t) or from fellow artists “I can’t compete with your lower prices”. I ran into a lady recently at an art show, we took a metal smithing class together in the spring and we were updating each other on our progress. She mentioned (something I remember her saying in class) that she refused to compete with those selling $12-$14 pre-fab earrings just to cover her booth fee. This is why she only does a handful, if that, of fairs a year.

I get that sentiment, really I do. But, I can see both sides as well. I sell very affordable jewelry because it helps me to make money for more pricier supplies, it’s also satisfying to sell jewelry to people who otherwise could not afford it. My taste is not that of the typical “artisan” jewelry. I like antique jewelry, collage, breaking rules about mixing metals, I like layering, interesting pendants, color combination and coming up with new ideas.  When I started buying supplies on etsy I noticed that a lot of my favorite jewelry was available in pieces for sale. My mind raced “what could I do with this? how can I make it interesting? or different?”

Some days I sit at my bench and throw things together, sometimes ideas morph from others, some days I draw sketches and cut metal, while others I simply assemble jewelry in a way that looks good to me. Not all of it is 100% about a movement or a statement. Sometimes I just need to get the ideas out and other days I am forced, yet always happy with the results. If I’m not? I start over. I never gave myself a standard with this, this is my one thing where there are no rules and I wouldn’t second guess myself. I just do it.

I’m not a competitive person by nature. I never joined quiz bowl or sports teams in school. My biggest challenger always has been and always will be myself. How can I be better than who I was yesterday? This is how I look at everything I do. I refuse to wait until I’m “good enough” or for someone else to grant me permission to participate. I refuse to let someone else’s standards shit on my parade. I’m not here to compete, challenge or win the race. If someone else needs be be first or number one? There is room for us all. I have people who love what I create, they come back for more…for exactly all of these reasons and that makes me happy, that keeps me coming back to my bench.

This is my beginning and I 100% own it regardless of how people feel about “assembled jewelry”. This does not mean that I am using it as a cash cow (still not rich), not growing/challenging myself, or exploiting it to be something it’s not. I am a designer first…I design my packaging, logos, websites, and jewelry. I take all of my own photography. This is what makes me excited about life. I am steering. I do not believe in waiting to do something when all the other pieces fall into place. Had I have waited until I learned metalsmithing (a continued process for me) to sell jewelry I would have missed out on so many experiences, friendships, social encounters, bookkeeping skills, packaging and marketing ideas.

This is a journey for me, the destination is unknown.

Decorating the Mantel

halloweendecor Decorating the Mantel

I’ve always loved old fireplace mantels, but since we don’t have a fireplace in our house I decided to hang a shelf in the dining area for decorating. I picked this shelf up along with a lot of our furniture from the basement of our old apartment in Brooklyn. I pretty much stalked and haunted the basement of our building ready to catch any old cast-aways.

halloween11 Decorating the Mantel

After our Halloween party I’m usually completely done with Halloween. I loved Halloween as a kid and I’m still disappointed that towns usually hold it on every other day except for on Halloween. If it lands on Saturday, they have it on Thursday. If it lands on Monday they have it on Tuesday. I’m convinced that there is no good day for kids to trick-or-treat.

Remember Halloween in the 90′s?! Mark Summers Halloween special! Right after dinner, right before trick-or-treat. Awesome. I miss you Mystery Magical Special!!

Was I talking about decorating?! When I buy decorative stuff I almost always make sure I can use it in more than one way. See that old stack of books? I use that in my jewelry display along with the little metal sugar holder. Those damask plates look good during Christmas too. Of course, a bottle of absenthe and those martha stewart favor bags could be cut out and framed. The candelabra was purchased at Goodwill for about two dollars. Put a crow on top and it looks like it came from a haunted mansion.
