Since The Beatles albums were first released on CD in 1987, Beatles fans have been waiting for their albums to be remastered and released on CD again because the initial mastering job done on the '87 CDs was so poor. It took 22 long years for that to finally happen, but now it has and these new box sets sound so great that I think the wait may have actually been worth it.
Not only were the stereo mixes (that were released on CD in '87) remastered, but the original mono mixes from the 1960s have been remastered as well and released on CD for the very first time.
This 16 disc box set includes every official UK album The Beatles released from 1962 through 1970 and every non-album track too (included on the double disc Past Masters set.) So just from a comprehensiveness standpoint, this is a fantastic box set.
But, of course, many Beatles fans already own all of their music on CD so why would they buy it again just because it's in a fancy box set with great new packaging and new liner notes? Because these new CDs sound far superior to the old CDs.

The 1987 CDs that most Beatles fans owned prior to the release of the new remastered Beatles CDs were mastered using 44.1 kHz 16 bit technology. The new CDs (included in The Beatles In Stereo Box Set) were remastered using 192 kHz 24 bit technology.
In simple terms this means that much more of the original sound from the original analog tapes was captured and transferred to the CDs. This leads to a sound that is both "warmer" and more clear. The ambience is there (and no unnecessary soul sucking noise cancellation is used) and the individual parts of the music cut through too.
It's amazing how much better these remastered CDs sound in comparison to the old CDs. To my ears there is absolutely no comparison. Songs like "Long Long Long" (from The White Album) sound so much more clear that it's almost like hearing them for the first time.
The Beatles Remastered Stereo Box Set is a "no brainer" purchase to me. This is something that every real Beatles fans should own. It looks great. The packaging is fantastic. It includes every single song The Beatles released during their active career from 1962 through 1970. And most importantly, it sounds absolutely incredible. This is the definitive Beatles collection.

This mono box set is something that Beatles "purists" have been asking for forever. It includes the original mono mix for every Beatles song that was originally mixed in mono (which means it includes the songs on all of their albums except for the last two which were only mixed in stereo.)
Like the stereo set, it also includes two discs with non album tracks which is a big deal because many of The Beatles biggest hits (such as "Hey Jude" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand") were never included on their studio albums. Unlike the stereo set, the individual CDs included in this box set are not available for individual purchase! They can only be bought as a part of the box set.

You may not understand why anyone would want to hear The Beatles music in mono instead of stereo? Stereo is better than mono isn't it? Well there is a good reason that stereo has become the standard way of listening to music. It allows for greater definition in the music (the ability to hear more different parts at once.)
But you have to understand that when The Beatles were recording their music in the 1960s that stereo was considered a "fad" and that the band themselves actually spent a lot more time working on the mono mixes. Because of this many people consider the Beatles albums as heard in The Beatles Mono Box Set to be the "real" albums as they were "meant to be heard."
You should also consider that many of these mono mixes sound significantly different from the stereo mixes which make them very interesting to listen to. For example "She's Leaving Home" from Sgt. Pepper sounds much different in mono than in stereo (it's faster and up a semitone in pitch.)
So whether you're a purist who wants to hear the albums as they were "meant to be heard" (and John Lennon once said that you haven't really heard Sgt. Pepper until you've heard it in mono) or you're just curious as to hear the differences between the stereo & mono mixes or you're just a collector (these box sets are being made in limited quantities) The Beatles In Mono Box Set is definitely highly recommended.
