pumpkin roll recipe love

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I've been on a baking kick lately. This past week I've made a key lime cheesecake, pumpkin roll, and pumpkin oatmeal cookies. Everything is sugary and good, but I had to freeze half of what I made to not go into a sugar coma. Our freezer is going to turn into a bakery if I keep it up. I've been obsessed with www.cooks.com. I don't know where all of this Martha Stewartesqe living is coming from. I'm even planning and looking forward to decorating for the holidays. I've been working on my holiday card design. This is my card design from last year: Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting I printed it out on sticker paper and placed it on recycled paper and put gold glitter around the edges. A lot of people told me the glitter went everywhere when they opened it. Sorry about that. If you want to be on my card list for this year, email me
I feel like my blog entries have been a little slow lately and it’s due mostly to my nine hour a day temp job. I'm very grateful to the job and the money right now, and part of me would like for it to be permanent. The other part of me continues to push forward to get out of the work week wheel. I have a list of things to post about today so keep checking back. I’m trying to get organized in some manner this weekend, so that I can utilize my time in a more creative way after work.

dear birthday

There is a new fall collection forming over at dear birthday and it’s beautiful! Valerie puts together a look that is uniquely hers. Her new line features updated floral henleys with extra long sleeves, a reversible jacket, perfectly detailed blouses and screened humpback whale t-shirts. The quality and originality of her work always leaves me in awe.

I wish I was an interior designer

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
This is what I have in mind for the kitchen. As you can see it needs a little help. I like the idea of red and turquoise together and bright colors with a hispanic theme. The fabric is from repro depot, I want to make curtains out of one of these fabrics, but I can't decide on one.

Indie business advice from a customer

1) Don’t be paranoid about idea stealers

I think about this often. There you are coming up with a great idea, putting time, labor, and money into a project and as soon as you present it in the cyber world someone on craftster or live journal is stealing it. Ouch! Is copying the highest form of flattery? Not for most when it comes to their livelihood. Most ideas are stolen from seasoned indie businesses. The copies fall short in quality, originality and usually do not sell. They eventually fade away. My point is this, don’t push potential customers/friends away and only share your work inside of a small core circle for fear of having your ideas stolen. It can become alienating when you let fear keep people away from your talent. There is a very talented you lady by the name of Yana Gorbulsky, she is the creator of supayana clothing and she does very well not only on eBay, but on her website and many boutiques. She is very inspiring and even inspired me to start making clothing. Yana appreciates her customers, shares information about her business and at one point let other ebayers use her company name in their keyword searches, saying that this was very flattering. She runs her business openly and unpretentiously. She is rewarded with high sales, repeat customers, and a very popular business. Go Yana! (www.supayana.com)

2) Respond to everyone!
I cannot tell you how frustrated I become when I email an indie business owner with compliments or questions and never get a response back. People are the reason why you even have a business, don’t neglect them. I have backed away from several indie businesses because of this. I do know how time consuming this can be and the volumes of emails that get sent to you at times, but even a simple thank you can go along way with a potential customer.

3) Myspace is your friend!
Oh myspace, how we love you for letting us befriend thousands of people. This will get the word out about your business. Sometimes you have to be shameless in your tactics to get noticed. There are people out there that are looking for you and this is one way of getting more attention to your product. Bulletins are helpful to let your fans know when you are having a sale or are putting a new product in your shop.

4) Blog, blog, blog
Many people are already doing this. And let’s face it: blogs can bring in extra money and popularity to your site. The more hits you get the more people want to pay you to sponsor your site for a small or large fee and the more well-known your art becomes. It’s smart and don’t be ashamed of doing it.

5) Find out what makes your work unique
I cannot tell you how many live journal groups I belong to with countless people selling plastic beaded jewelry and poorly crafted tote bags. We’ve all seen it, and we’ve all been there. Or maybe just me! (you should see what I was making when I first got my sewing machine or when I was hand sewing.) You have to start somewhere and these ladies are getting their feet wet. But, if you want to be taken seriously; learn your craft and learn it well then find out what makes you stand out from the crowd and use it to your advantage, don’t be afraid of an idea because you haven’t seen anyone else doing it. It’s a good thing!

6) Get outside of the community
The indie/crafty/diy community is great! But, you have to keep in mind that while these are the people that will often buy from you and help you out they are also the people that are doing what you do. They also have an appreciation for handmade items over mass produced ones. Just keep in mind that there are a lot of people outside of this community itching for your unique products and probably would buy from you if they knew about you. This makes me think of Etsy. There are artists that do really well with Etsy mainly because they are known outside of Etsy and other small online crafting communities. I feel that most people who use and know about Etsy are people looking to sell there, not primarily to buy. Ask some of your friends who don’t craft if they have ever heard of Etsy. Look at it this way (I’m bad at analogies) if there is a milk market and the only people that know about and use the milk market are milk farmers, what kind of sales should the farmers expect? Keep this in mind when you are plugging away on livejournal groups and Etsy. Don’t get me wrong, they can be very helpful tools, but thinking outside of the community (box) will help you out in the long run. www.etsy.com

7) Wear your product
If it can be worn, wear it. This is the best way for other people to see your work. I cannot tell you how much this has worked for me and so many other crafters. (Recruiting friends can be good for this as well, and they are usually more than happy to wear your goods!) It gets people interested and curious. So, when they ask and you say impressively that you made it yourself, they surely will want your business card to know more. Oh yeah, are you carrying any business cards and promotional items?

8) You should be! Carry promotional items with you and give them out with orders
Many times when you are out it is good to be able to leave something about your business with someone who is interested. Give them out for free and with orders. Get creative with these they are a great business tool.

9) Packaging and displays
I love when my order comes in the mail and I love it even more when it has a personal touch! Sometimes even poop can look good if it’s packaged correctly! Well, maybe not, but the truth is a little tissue paper, a note card, and any other creative packaging can make ordering from you again that much more appealing. Do some research by taking a look around the web, order from other designers, and find out what other people are doing to make their products look that much better. It’s important to be creative and unique when designing your website, packaging and displays.

10) Stay inspired and don’t give up
If you’re serious about making and selling your products don’t give up. The first few months and year will be your hardest to stay motivated and inspired to keep going. I’ve seen a lot of potential in many indie businesses that gave up because they weren’t selling like they had hoped. This isn’t going to happen over night and customers will develop trust in your business if it has staying power. Staying inspired can be especially hard. If you’re like me, there will be many days when you just cannot come up with an original idea and feel that creating anything spectacular will never happen again. I once heard someone say “you cannot fail, if you never give up.” If you keep trying at something and it isn’t working, instead of giving up, try another approach.

11) Craft fairs, magazines, consignment, and link trading
What are you waiting for? Get yourself out there!

i need my mums

I have some big news. Well, maybe it's only exciting to me, but the new season of Ghost Hunters starts Wednesday on the Sci-Fi network. Unfortunately, I do not have cable, but I do have the internet and the first episode came out today!

I am also very excited about fall. I really think it is the epitome of perfect weather and its so pretty outside. I went to a fall festival in union square this past Saturday and it’s a far cry from the pumpkin festival in Milton, WV. First and foremost they were not handing out plastic fetuses (yes, this really happens.) and selling Avon, which is a good thing. Sadly, there weren’t any pumpkins or pumpkin infused foods.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This was taken at the green market in union square. It’s really wonderful, I love it.

I’ve also decided in the last few days that there should be some sort of ceremony or special notice for pigtails. The pigtail has brought me through many tough hair times and I believe it should be rewarded for what it can do for long and short hair. Those pigtail buns are especially cute on long hair. Anyhow, I’d like to start a collection of pigtail photos for a visual contribution to the most convenient hairstyle in the world. Yes, the world. Please contribute photos of yourself at loveyoudeerlovesyou@gmail.com

Q: Name: Brenda Kao
Age: 26
Hometown: Silver Spring, Maryland
Current location: Silver Spring, Maryland
Occupation: Hair stylist by day, closet basement crafter by night.

Q: Anything you want to add about yourself. School, jobs, goals, your past, or whatever you feel like sharing.
I like to work with my hands and I enjoy learning new things. I make a mess of my basement when I sew. I want to do something big in life, but I haven't figured out what yet.

Q: What type of tools do you use to help create your designs?
I have two sewing machines: one regular not-so-fancy one that has a great stretch stitch and another fancy embroidering machine that doesn't have a great stretch stitch. The seam ripper is one of my handiest tools because it can get you out of almost any scary sewing situation. Right next to my fancy sewing machine is my computer and a cd player which helps to get me motivated (but also lets me procrastinate). I also use a variety of reclaimed materials.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Q: Who/what inspires your art?
Vintage fabrics, unique textures and intricate patterns. I try to go thrifting when I can - so when I find something I really like, it makes me want to go home, wash it, and make something. :)

Q: Do you have a creative process?
When I sew, it's usually because I've been inspired by something. So I'll just start ironing and cutting fabric. I rarely work off patterns and just go from memory and feeling.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Q: Who are your favorite indie designers?
I'm one of Cut + Paste's Partners In Craft (http://www.cutxpaste.com), so I'm exposed to a lot of great designers and crafters. My favorites are Roxy Marj, Michele Lau, and Genevieve Dionne. I think Wendy Mullin of Built by Wendy (http://www.builtbywendy.com) is really creative as far as her line themes go. She's also really smart to have created her own sewing patterns for sale as well.

Q: What other types of art are you interested in, why?
I've been going to a lot of gallery openings lately with my artist friend Victor. I like looking at new things and seeing what the DC art scene has to offer. Victor's work is also something that I love looking at because it's so different from what I do. He does a lot of mixed-media digital work. You should check out his website: http://www.unconstruct.com.

Q: First handmade item that you made and bought:
I did a little bit of sewing here and there when I was younger. I had this idea that I'd make like 500 scrunchies and sell them at a flea market when I was about 10. I had so many, it was ridiculous. They never made it to the flea market, but my older sister Sandra was kind enough to use a few. Okay, so that probably doesn't count, does it? About nine years ago, I mustered enough motivation to make myself a black pencil skirt with red trim at the bottom. It was simple, but it made me want to make more clothes for myself. As far as the first handmade item I purchased - I can't really remember. I've gotten lots of things from Roxy Marj over the years, so we'll just say her! She thinks outside of the box and is a fantastic illustrator.

Q: Where do you find subject matter?
Anywhere. I was on a big nature kick a few years ago, but lately I've been focusing on patterns rather than tangible objects.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Q: How long have you been interested in creating your own line of handmade items?
Probably since around 2002 when I stumbled across Cut + Paste. I had been sewing for a few years and was only making things for people I knew. So I decided to see how consigning would be and it's worked out really well. I was one of the first Partners In Craft and I've been consigning with Cut + Paste for about five years now.

Q: What got you interested?
Positive responses from others. Even now, it's nice when others show interest and appreciation for my work. It makes me want to create more things! So thanks for taking an interest in my work. :)

Q: Your style moto is:
I don't think everything has to be matchy-matchy. I get yelled at by a friend of mine because she says I never match. But I'm more into complimenting and coordinating, not so much matching things perfectly. I love using lots of colors in my work because it makes me happy.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Q: Favorite food, tv shows, movies , book, magazines, and music?
Favorite food: Maybe sushi. That's a really hard question because all food is so amazing.
TV shows: By far, LOST is my favorite show ever.
Movies: Together just might be my favorite. I just saw The Science of Sleep which was also really good.
Book: My Chinatown, Blu's Hanging, The Unbearable Lightness of Being.
Magazines: N.E.E.T., BUST, Lucky, Jane.
Music: Sappy indie rock.

and the small voice said

Sometimes I get these ideas in my head that I eventually work out and make. I never know if the idea will really work until I make a sample and mess up a few times before I like what I've come up with. I had this bag idea:
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

That was floating around until I finally made it in about 3 hours a couple of weeks ago. It has flaws; the clasps wont fasten because I put them on backwards, the lining shows, its too big and the shoulder strap needs tweaking. Other than that I'm pretty pleased with the sample.

I watched 5 episodes of Weeds season one today and so far I'm hooked! I really love Mary-
Louise Parker. Also, I went on a job interview this afternoon when the man interviewing me actually said "i'm sorry, but can we meet tomorrow?". It took me an hour to get there, and 4$ dollars. He owes me $4 and a job. hmph.

Q: Anything you want to add about yourself. School, jobs, goals, your past, or whatever you feel like sharing.

I'm a small business owner in Southern Ohio. My brother and I own a TCBY and are in the process of selling out. Owning a restaurant has made me realize that I need art in my life! (You can only scoop frozen yogurt for so long). So... I'm going to school for Visual Arts and photography. I've wanted to be an artist since I was 5 years old so i'm heading in the right direction

Q: What type of camera (s) do you use?
Nikon N-60- I'm currently experimenting with a holga (a medium format camera) I'll let you know how it goes!
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Q: Do you use any special techniques when taking photographs?
Point and shoot! It's all about trial and error.

Q: Who/what inspires your art?
A lot of my ideas come from my outlook on life. I've kept a journal for over 5 years, so a lot of my thoughts tend to come out on paper, in one way or another. I enjoy coming up with ideas that express some of my personal/moral views. I tend to be drawn to things that are rich in history; I love old buildings, and objects that show how time has consumed them. I also have a serious appreciation for ironic humor.

Q: Do you have a creative process?
I try as much as I can to think outside of the box. I push myself to look at things from different perspectives.

Q: Where do you find subject matter?
I like to shoot mundane objects and try to show their simplistic beauty; Beauty that would otherwise go unnoticed. Every once in a while I'll set up a still life to get my point across.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Q: How long have you been interested in photography?
About 5 years.

Q: What got you interested?
Being in nature. I found myself taking 'photography adventures' on a regular basis. Over the years I've developed a love for it.

Q: Which is your favorite photograph?
Either the photograph of the rusty henge, or the woman pulling the pan out of the oven. The last picture mentioned, I did for a project called 'American Woman'. I wanted to show how the media's idea of a woman is someone who cooks, cleans, and looks hot all the while, (while wearing a huge diamond ring haha) I enjoyed the humor in that project.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Q: What other types of art are you interested in?
I love collage work. Any type of mixed media is interesting to me. Sketching has always been a favorite, especially portraiture.

Q: Favorite photographer?
Richard Avedon
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Q: Favorite food, tv shows, movies , book, magazines, and music?
I love Manicotti!!! and Spinach!

I actually don't watch tv and don't generally have the attention span for movies! haha

I really love any book written by SARK: Succulent Wild Woman, Bodacious Book of Succulence, they're all great! I like to read anything about reincarnation.. or past life regression

Music! Simon and Garfunkel, The Cranberries, Portishead, Johnny Cash, Bruce Hornsby, Smashing Pumpkins, Lisa Loeb, Bob Dylan, Amos Lee, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, I love the 60's era. But honestly, I love it all.

The etsy bitsy spider

I wonder if Etsy.com is as overwhelming to other people as it is to me. Each section has hundreds of items waiting to be bought and it takes 30 minutes just to make it through one area. But, I did it anyway. Here are some of my favorite etsy artists and their goods in the housewares section.

This is a shirt I made over the summer while teaching myself clothing construction. You never realize how much time and effort goes into the clothes you wear until you start making them. It helps me realize that clearance items are usually at someones expense.
I love this shirt and hope it goes to a good home!

curb alert! free stuff! must take all! no sorters!!!

I have been known to go to great lengths to get something for free. I get this from my mother. It’s a small tick in my head short of being a kleptomaniac. My eyes get big, my heart starts pounding, my palms sweat, and I nervously laugh when I find out I just got something for free. I discovered two things recently:
1. people throw out tons of great stuff every day and put it right on the street corner
2. craigslist has a free section (!)

While we were walking to dinner one night me and josh spotted a large framed painting.
The first thing that came to mind was to paint over it and hang it up in the living room. Free art!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Soon after discovering the free section on craigslist I noticed someone giving away their Tupperware collection about 24 blocks away and it had to be picked up that night. I pictured tons of vintage Tupperware and had to have it. The guy asked me if I wanted any of his other kitchen stuff. Of course I did.

About an hour later me and Josh arrived at 96th street looking for his apartment number. He told me it was the lower bell and when we saw the place it was a two story town house with a basement. I couldn’t figure out what he meant by the lower bell. I dared Josh to go on the porch and ring the bell, but he made me go with him. A couple of seconds later a little boy ran to the door window and yelled “wrong house!” I continued to yell “does Michael live here? Downstairs?” and he shook his head no. We started to head down the steps when a woman on the second floor opened the window and told us that Michael lived down the street and pointed to a couple of guys standing outside. At that point I realized I wrote down the wrong address. We headed down the street and I greeted the man standing there and said “are you Michael?” he nodded and I said “hi, im Lorrie” he just stood there and gave me a puzzled look. It wasn’t Tupperware-Michael. I apologized and we kept walking. Josh started getting freaked out that maybe we had been scammed. We started walking quickly back to the train. The guys then said “are you getting something from someone?” we said yes and he said “oh yeah, Michael lives next door”. I rang the lower bell and Michael answered handing us three bags full of stuff. We thanked him and left. The situation still makes me laugh, but it was worth it.
We got home and realized that he gave us two large wooden bowls, wooden spoons, five small wooden bowls, six very good knives, a large George Forman grill, two cutting boards, avocado green pot, a safety can opener and last but not least…four glad ware containers!

Love you, deer *
4 weeks and 2 days later after I've moved to Brooklyn I have had three interviews, 8 meals from Taj Mahal, 4 days of dog walking, one flaming lips concert, 11lbs lighter, became a registered New York voter, a member of the Brooklyn public library, read many free publications, used one unlimited monthly metro card, saw one Coney island freak show, three trips to the movies, one Scumbo show, sewed one messenger bag, got 6 knives for free, painted one picture, bought groceries off of the internet twice, watched two hours of tv, watched many Netflix dvds and received 5 hand written letters.

At first I wanted to sub-title my blog, “my unconventional guide to life”. I’m not sure exactly what this will evolve into. I’ve written many online diary entries in the past five years and would like to head in a more interesting direction. A direction that includes: art projects (and ideas), things that I find humorous, interviews with people that inspire me, exploring design, and documenting many adventures I plan on taking.

I hope you will join me!
love, Lorrie

*love you deer is a title that I came up with one night while spending time with friends.
